| ABSTRCT | Marine ProtectedAreas(MPAs)areacost-efficient andmanagement-effectivetool.FisheryResource
ConservationZones(FRCZs)areonetypeofMPAinTaiwan,andtheyweredesignatedtoensurethe
sustainability of fishery resourcessince1976;however,governmentappropriationsaretheonly
financing sourceforFRCZs,leadingtomanpowerandequipmentshortagesforFRCZmanagement.This
study selectedtheTouchingandSuaoFRCZsinYilanCountyofTaiwanascasesstudies.Toassessthe
feasibility ofestablishingasustainable financing mechanismforMPAs,theContingentValuationMethod
(CVM) wasappliedtoexaminerespondents'willingnesstopay(WTP)tosetupafundforFRCZ
management. Theempiricalresultsindicatedthatapproximately90%ofrespondentswouldbewillingto
donate fundingforMPAs,andtheWTPperrespondentisNT$586.51(US$19.6).Thus,establishingan
MPAfundisafeasiblewaytooperateTaiwaneseMPAsthroughaco-managementframeworkinvolving
the centralgovernment,localgovernment,localcommunitiesandstakeholders.However,basedonour
empirical results,aco-management financing mechanismforMPAsshouldbeestablishedtoensure
stable anddiverse financing sources. |
